Website Design Checklist

Oh what I would do without my checklists.

Not everyone is a website design genius, so if you are feeling overwhelmed with your new website project, take a look at this checklist for everything you need to get started.

1. Domain

A domain name is the digital address that people will use to get connected to your site. Usually, it is the first thing you need when starting a new website. Like your fingerprint, your domain name is unique to your website and your website only. It cannot be shared between different sites. However, though your domain name and your website are connected, they are separate items. You can change your website at anytime and still keep your existing domain name. Still confused? Stay tuned for next week’s blog “Domain Names 101”.

2. Business Email Address

Once you have a domain name, it is super easy to create a business email address. Having an email address with your domain name creates trust and credibility with your customers on the internet. It can help you attract new customers and grow your business!

3. Choose a Website Building Software

This part is tricky for those that do not have a web development background. I’ve said this a million times but I’ll say it again – DO NOT go cheap when building your website. Hire a trustworthy, professional website designer/developer that has experience building websites using specific software. WordPress is our go-to at Falco Design. It is extremely flexible and easy to use. Once we develop your website using WordPress we will train you on how to maintain, edit and update your site all on your own.

4. Website Hosting

A host is where your website lives. Whenever someone searches for your website, the browser will fetch your content from your website host. How you choose your hosting all depends on how many visitors are coming to your site. The more visitors you have, the more advanced you want your hosting to be. We recommend Media Temple, for about $20 a month you get a seamless hosting experience that is easy to navigate and comes with business email addresses!

I’m sure you have googled “what do I need to design a website” and almost every person told you to choose a template. This is the worst advice. Sure, if you want your website to look like every single other website on the internet, go on and choose a design template. If you are serious about standing out amongst competition and gaining new customers, you need to invest in a custom website design. When you have a website that is completely custom, it shows your customers you are serious about your business and that you plan on doing business with them for years to come. If this is your first website, it makes it even more important to have something unique and original that you can be proud to show off to your new following.

6. High Quality Images

Using high quality, unique and genuine images is a simple way to make your website look 100X more professional. Fuzzy, extremely tiny images will not give your customers the impression you want to leave with them. You don’t have to be a skilled photographer – GettyImages or Shutterstock have amazing stock images that can be used to portray your values and visions as a business.

7. Call Falco Design

Hiring a professional website designer/developer is a sure fire way to create a professional, eye-catching website that will outshine your competition. It is so easy today to build a website for 50 bucks and say “okay I’m done”. Then, in two months when your website crashes and the company you hired disappeared into thin air, you are left with nothing but a 404 error. This happens quite often. Investing in a professionally designed website will eliminate all of those possibilities and will leave you with something that will last as long as your business does (hopefully forever, am I right?!).

8. Google Analytics

Google analytics is an important tool you must have to understand how your visitors are interacting with your website. You can analyze page visits, visit duration, bounce rate, etc. Such data can give you incredible insights about how your visitors interact with your website so you can make necessary improvements.

Call Falco Design today to start crushing competition with your new, professional website. I always answer the phone, so no worries, you will not be placed on hold for 4 hours!
